Celebrate a year of Unlocking the Vaults

Join us at The Exchange as we celebrate the halfway point of the Unlocking the Vaults project, a fascinating journey into the history and legacy of the Birmingham Municipal Bank.

Meet members of the volunteer research group as they share their discoveries, insights, and passion for uncovering the story of this pioneering civic institution. Drawing on materials from the Library of Birmingham archives and other sources, the group has explored the Municipal Bank’s role in the city's financial and social landscape.

You’ll also hear stories from characters connected with the bank, with performances based on oral histories in collaboration with The Birmingham Rep’s education team.

The story so far

Birmingham Municipal Bank earned the name "The People's Bank" locally by empowering working people to save, invest, and build a secure future.

Our project has already revealed the significance of the Birmingham Municipal Bank, not only as a financial institution but also as a cornerstone of community life. Through a wide variety of activities, the project is engaging schools, communities, and visitors alike, continuing the bank’s tradition of bringing people together since its founding in 1919.

Come and discover how this remarkable institution helped shape Birmingham’s story and how its legacy continues to inspire pride in the city’s rich heritage. With thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Suitable for all ages.

This event is drop-in between 11 am and 3 pm.
