Inaugural Lecture of Professor Lesley Batty

Footprints in the Field

Fieldwork is arguably one of the key aspects of anyone involved in Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Professor Lesley Batty's lecture will explore how fieldwork has guided and informed every aspect of her career, from her first steps in childhood through to her research in industrial pollution. Lesley will also explore what fieldwork means in modern teaching especially in the current context of digital technology and why it should remain core to our disciplines.

Biography

Lesley Batty is a Professor in Environmental Science Education in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. She has a BSc in Environmental Science, a MRes in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and was awarded a PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2000 for her work on wetlands contaminated with acid mine drainage. Her teaching work focuses on inclusivity, accessibility and employability, and she was awarded Principal Fellowship of the HEA in 2023. Her love of fieldwork stems from spending lots of time in the Peak District as a child but also the transformative moment of encountering the acidic pit lake at Pary Mountain on Anglesey which triggered her lifelong love of industrial sites.
