Join us for Dr Manfredo Capriolo's Lapworth Lecture.

The NERC-funded C-FORCE project aims to characterise and quantify greenhouse gas emissions from the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) at the time of Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Along with Geophysics and Palaeoclimatology, Igneous Petrology and Geochemistry offer a valuable and complementary angle on the development of the C-FORCE project. In detail, tiny droplets of silicate melts and various fluids were entrapped within growing crystals in NAIP basalts forming melt and fluid inclusions, which provide progressive snapshots on C species evolution across the magmatic history of this Large Igneous Province. Because of their emplacement across the PETM and their original proximity to the centre of the mantle plume, we primarily targeted East Greenland (Skaergaard Intrusion with its overlying Plateau Basalts) and Faroe Islands (across Beinisvørð, Hvannhagi, Prestfjall and Malinstindur Formations). However, we also analysed basaltic rocks from Eriador Ridge and Edoras Bank, belonging to a thickened portion of NAIP-coeval oceanic crust in the North Atlantic Ocean, sampled over two expeditions aboard the research vessel Celtic Explorer. Achievements, ongoing work and future developments of the C-FORCE project will be explored throughout this presentation.

About Manfredo

After his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Earth Sciences at the University of Torino (Italy), Manfredo moved to the University of Padova for his PhD degree, during which he spent a 1-year visiting period at the University of Leeds. In 2022, Manfredo has been awarded with the Tesi di Dottorato award for the best PhD thesis by the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia (SIMP). From 2021 to 2023, he has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED), University of Oslo (Norway), including a 6-week visiting period at the Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (CRPG), University of Lorraine (France). Since 2023, Manfredo is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham, employed on a UKRI-funded Large Grant until September 2026. From November 2026, he will be back to Norway with a permanent position as Scientist at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE).
