Special Guest speaker: Professor Carrie Winstanley from the University of Roehampton.
Come and raise a glass to toast the publication of a textbook which provides an up-to-date, accessible introduction to the philosophy of education with a focus on the conceptual and normative questions raised by educational policy and practice. We’ll be discussing the genesis of the book and answering your questions.

Professor Carrie Winstanley is Professor of Pedagogy in the School of Education at the University of Roehampton, UK. Her published books include Too Clever By Half: A fair deal for gifted children (Trentham Books, 2004), Philosophy in Schools (Continuum, 2008), Raising the Achievement of All Pupils within an Inclusive Setting: practical strategies for developing best practice (Routledge, 2009), The Ingredients of Challenge (Trentham Books, 2010) and Education, Philosophy and Wellbeing (Routledge, 2014). Her research and teaching focuses on philosophy in schools, special and inclusive education for children with different educational needs (particularly high ability and learning difficulties) and art, museum and gallery education.
Dr Laura D’Olimpio is Associate Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of Birmingham, UK. Her published books include Media and Moral Education: a philosophy of critical engagement (Routledge, 2018), Educating Character Through the Arts (Routledge, 2023), Short Cuts: Philosophy (Icon Books, 2023), The Necessity of Aesthetic Education: the place of the arts on the curriculum (Bloomsbury, 2024) and Philosophy of Education (Palgrave MacMillan, 2025). She is co-founding editor of the open access Journal of Philosophy in Schools and a regular contributor to public philosophy outlets such as Radio National’s ‘The Philosopher’s Zone’ and The Conversation.
Dr Jane Gatley is a Lecturer in Education at Swansea University, UK. Prior to this, she worked with Ruth and Laura as an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Her research covers questions about the school curriculum, the tension between different educational aims, and the nature and aims of philosophy as a discipline. She is the author of the monograph Why Teach Philosophy in Schools (Bloomsbury, 2023) and a co-editor of Conceptual Engineering in Education (Brill, 2024).
Dr Ruth Wareham is a Teaching Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Birmingham. She was previously Education Campaigns Manager for Humanists UK, where she continues to work as an Education Policy Researcher. Ruth is a qualified primary school teacher and, before entering academia, worked in schools in Birmingham and the West Midlands for six years. Ruth's primary research interests sit at the intersection between religion, belief, and education. She is currently working on a book about the place of faith schools in liberal democracies.
