The Attorney General is the highest-ranking legal official within the government, and serves, among many other duties, as the chief legal adviser to the crown, overseer of the Crown Prosecution Service and the Government Legal Department and, in exceptional cases of great importance, as representative of the government or prosecutor for the crown within the courtroom. Mr Wright represents the government at the International Court of Justice, and is also the MP for Kenilworth and Southam, in Warwickshire.
During the visit, our students will present to him about the pro bono work we are doing here at the Law School. The Attorney General will also speak about his role as Pro Bono Champion within the government and participate in a panel discussion about the importance of pro bono work and access to justice. This will be a fascinating and insightful opportunity for our students to learn about legal practice at the highest level, and a reminder of how our own Pro Bono work fits into the national pro bono context.
This visit follows Birmingham Law School's success at the 2017 LawWorks and Attorney General Awards, at which we were proud to be awarded 'Best Contribution by a Law School'.
National Pro Bono Week is an annual week, which celebrates the breadth and impact of the contribution made by the legal profession, free of charge, to many people and organisations in need of legal advice who otherwise would not be able to afford it. It supports and promotes the work carried out by solicitors, barristers, legal executives, academics, law students and professional service staff alike. It is currently in its sixteenth year.
