Award Description

The Bury and Bolton Hometown Award has been created by an alumnus of the University originally from Bury in Greater Manchester. The public funding he gratefully received to study at Birmingham helped him to build his own career. The award is intended to assist students from the donor's hometown who are from a modest family income background, and who have similarly chosen undergraduate study at Birmingham to help them achieve their full potential and underpin their own career

The award is aimed at providing financial support to students with verified household incomes of below £42,875 who were resident in Bury in Greater Manchester, or Bolton during their A Levels or equivalent qualification. Priority will be given to those students from Bury in Great Manchester. 

Value of Award

This scholarship is valued at £1,750 per academic year (for a maximum of 3 years), subject to successful academic progression.

Eligibility Criteria

The Bury and Bolton Hometown award is aimed at a students entering their first year of study. 

Eligible candidates should meet the following criteria: 

  • Domiciled in the UK
  • During A-Levels (or equivalent qualification) their home address was located within Bury in Greater Manchester or Bolton. 
  • Have a verified household income of £42,875 or less

In the case that more applications are received than meet the above eligibility criteria, priority will be given to an applicant whose home address is located nearest the town of Radcliffe in Bury, Greater Manchester.
