The Hywel Davies Scholarships were established thanks to the generosity of William Hywel John Davies who kindly left a gift to Birmingham in his will. Hywel (BA French and Spanish, 1977) enjoyed his time at Birmingham and wished to give something back to support future generations of French and Spanish students.

The Hywel Davies Scholarship is valued at £2,000 per academic year, excluding any years abroad. Up to two scholarships will be awarded each year.

Who can apply?

In order to make an application for the Hywel Davies Scholarship you must:

  • Be an undergraduate student in the Department of Modern Languages, studying either French or Spanish
  • Be in your first year of study
  • Have a household income of under £60,000 and have been means tested and be eligible for a Maintenance Loan from the Student Loans Company. Please note you do not have to take the loan to be considered for the award
  • Not be in receipt of the Chamberlain Award or Pathways to Birmingham Scholarship

Home students only are eligible to apply for this award.
