Information for disabled students

The University is committed to producing global citizens and providing students with as many opportunities as possible to internationalise their degrees. The International Office and academic departments work with partner institutions to try and ensure that the study abroad programme is accessible to everybody. However, due to both cultural and legal differences abroad we cannot guarantee that disabled students will receive the same degree/type of support or adjustments that they have experienced at the University of Birmingham.

Your academic department, International Office, and Student Support Services will endeavour to provide you with the most accurate information possible about the host institutions available, what support you can expect there, and about any funding implications.

We advise you to:

  • Plan ahead!  Any extra support or adjustments you need are likely to take some time to arrange, even in the most accessible of institutions.
  • Research the country and institution of your choice to try and find out if the placement will be suitable for you.
  • Review your support requirements in discussion with both your academic department and Student Support Services, taking into account the fact that you will be away from usual support given by friends and family.

If you have not already disclosed your disability to the University or registered with Student Support Services (Disability and Learning Support Teams, Mental Health Advisory Service), please go to our website for more information.

The data will only be used for the purpose of accepting your nomination to the institution, and any further data required by the institution will be sought from you directly.
