Funding for short term

The University of Birmingham offers funding to students as a contribution to the costs of participating in an international summer opportunity. The level of funding depends on your circumstances, duration and destination of the programme, and is subject to availability.

Helpful tips:

  • Use Go Global Summer Canvas course to research the anticipated costs of different opportunities.
  • Placements must have a minimum duration of 4 weeks to be eligible for funding.
  • There is additional funding available for students from widening participation backgrounds. This includes some fully funded opportunities for Birmingham Scholars.
  • Students with special educational needs or a disability are encouraged to apply. There is additional funding available to support with costs related to their needs whilst abroad.

Turing Scheme

The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s scheme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. It supports Global Britain by providing an opportunity for UK organisations from the higher education to offer their students life-changing experiences to study or work abroad.

  • This is competitive - funding is dependent on availability and eligibility. Priority will be given to students from widening participation backgrounds.
  • Placements must have a minimum duration of 4 weeks (a minimum of 28 days including travel).
  • Both undergraduate (including final year) and postgraduate students can apply for Turing funding.
  • Widening participation students receive a cost of living and travel grant; whilst non-widening participation students receive a cost-of-living grant to contribute to the costs.
