The University of Birmingham ended up with an almost clean sweep of wins at the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Team Championship Finals last weekend. The hosts had cause to celebrate with 3 out of 4 finals ending in success for the Birmingham players.
In the Knockout Men’s Championship, Birmingham’s 1st team - Jaymie Haycocks, Joel Hinds (British under 19 No. 2), Chris Truswell, Tom Power and Mike Bull - beat Aberdeen 5-0 in the first round and University of Wales in Cardiff (UWIC) 4-1 in the semi-finals. The final against Manchester ended in a 4-1 win for Birmingham, giving them the championship title for the 3rd successive year.
A similar story unfolded for Birmingham 2nds in the Knockout Men’s Trophy, where they retained the title for a second year in a row. The team battled through 3 rounds, beating Leeds, Manchester and University of Wales Swansea on the way to the final. A 4-1 victory against rival university Loughborough secured the Trophy.
The women didn’t disappoint either in the Women’s Championships, becoming the titleholders for the first time since 1992. The 1st team, consisting of Leonie Halt, Carrie Hastings, Alex Clark, Jenny Tamblyn and Rachel Donald, proved unbeatable against Warwick, Oxford, and Loughborough and similarly UWIC who they faced in the final, which concluded in a win of 4-1.
Squash Coach Keir Worth commented: “These results are a great achievement only adding to what has been an unprecedented period of success for the University of Birmingham. It is a fantastic and fitting reward for the efforts of all the players and for the support given by the University”.
The women’s 2nds were unfortunately knocked out by Manchester, the overall winners, in the 2nd round of the Women’s Trophy after beating Sheffield 4-1 in the first.
