Edgbaston Cricket Ground will make history next week when it hosts it’s first University Twenty20 cricket match.

The University of Birmingham and Warwick University will get a taste of what it is like to play professionally when they take each other on as a curtain raiser to the Warwickshire Bears and Worcester Royals game on June 20th.

James McLaughlin, Commercial Director for the Warwickshire County Cricket Club says; “This as a great opportunity for both Universities to enjoy themselves at a venue that has hosted world class cricket stars over the years.”

Hundreds of Birmingham and Warwick University staff and students are expected to turn out to witness their teams playing for the first time at the prestigious ground. They’ll also enjoy the ‘Beach Party Theme’ that will be taking over part of the venue, with one of the bars being transformed into a ‘University Beach Bar’, with a DJ, decorations and student deals available.

Play begins at 1130 and members of the public attending the later game are also being encouraged to enjoy two local derbies for the price of one and arrive early to show their support for the University sides.

University of Birmingham Cricket Club captain, Chris Hemmings says; “It’s going to be a nerve-wracking experience but the whole team is incredibly excited for the opportunity to play at this amazing venue. We’re hoping for as much support as possible and fingers crossed we’ll bring home a Birmingham victory!”

Student tickets are available the Munrow Sports Centre at the University of Birmingham (0121 4144117) as well as the University of Warwick.
