A University of Birmingham student is one step closer to Beijing after winning the 1500m with an Olympic qualifying time at the National Collegiate AA Championships in Iowa.

After easing through the preliminary rounds, Hannah England smashed her previous personal best by six seconds to cross the line in 4.06.19 and position herself as the fastest woman in Britain over the distance.

After selecting England to be part of her mentoring programme ‘On Camp with Kelly’ over two years ago, Double Olympic medallist Dame Kelly Holmes has played a key role in the youngsters development.

Currently studying and training at Florida State University for a year as part of her Biochemistry degree at the University of Birmingham, Hannah will be returning to the city next month for Olympic trials.

Speaking on her win England said; “I was hoping to get the Olympic standard time maybe when I was back in Britain but I’m thrilled to get this result at this stage. I’m now really looking forward to being back in Birmingham for trials.”

During her time in the USA the 21 year old has collected a host of personal bests and titles including winning the NCAA indoor mile with a PB of 4.35.30 back in March.
