The results of the latest (2008) research assessment exercise confirm the School of Physics and Astronomy as one of the leading research institutions in the country. The School of Physics and Astronomy was joint fifth in the country with 20% of the research rated as internationally leading, and a further 40% rated as internationally excellent.

The School of Physics and Astronomy was joint fifth in the country with 20% of the research rated as internationally leading, and a further 40% rated as internationally excellent.
Our success builds on a continuous record of achievement over past RAEs where we scored grade 5 ratings. The latest results were published in December 2008 but this time in the form of a profile of research excellence. Averaging over all our research gives us a score of 2.70 which placed us 12th in the country. This result is a reflection, not just on our achievements since 2001 across all areas of our research, but also our forward-looking vision for where we are heading as a School.
