Following the Urban Theology Forum screening of a documentary film entitled ‘Beggars of Lahore’ the
filmmaker, the Doctoral researcher Sheba Saeed and Dr Chris Shannahan from the Theology and Religion
department explored the nature and causes of begging in the global city and in particular the capacity of the Muslim pillar of Zakat to address the poverty, inequality, homelessness and unemployment that arguably result from urbanisation. In discussion people from faith groups across the city, students and staff asked if the problems prevalent in Lahore are evident in UK cities like Birmingham too.
