Peter Butkovic is one of the pioneers of the theory of max-linear systems, a new and rapidly evolving area of linear algebra and applied discrete mathematics. He published numerous papers and a research monograph in this area. His research was supported by four EPSRC grants and several grants from LMS and RS. Over the years Peter taught more than 5000 students, supervised 7 postgraduate students, gave mini-courses and numerous invited lectures at international conferences, organised an international conference and four mini-symposia. He is the chair of the joint research group in tropical mathematics supported by the LMS. Peter is an associate editor of Linear Algebra and Its Applications and an external examiner at Ecole Polytechnique in France. Over the last 16 years he has been substantially involved in the management of teaching.
