MRes Clinical Psychology student Joshua Muggleton has had an article published on the Guardian website in which he discusses the American Psychiatric Association (APA)'s plans to remove the terms "Asperger's syndrome" and "autism" and replace them with "autism spectrum disorder".
MRes Clinical Psychology student Joshua Muggleton has had an article published on the Guardian website in which he discusses the American Psychiatric Association (APA)’s plans to remove the terms "Asperger's syndrome" and "autism" and replace them with "autism spectrum disorder".
The APA plans to make this change in the revised psychiatrists' Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders.
Diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome over six years ago, Joshua is a campaigner for the acceptance and opportunities for those on the autism spectrum. He is also studying for a Masters of Research in Clinical Psychology in the School of Psychology. Within this article he presents his views on these plans from his unique position, both as an individual with Asperger’s syndrome, and as a psychologist.
