The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences (SportEx) is celebrating the success of second year Doctoral Student, Richard Bruce, at a recent scientific meeting held in London’s Queen Elizabeth II, Conference Centre. The meeting entitled ‘The Biomedical Basis of Elite Performance’ was a joint meeting of The Physiological Society, the British Pharmacological Society and publishers Wiley-Blackwell; supported by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. The meeting attracted nearly 500 experts from around the world with an interest in human performance. Richard presented a poster on his work, which relates to the control of breathing in humans and he was delighted to be awarded one of only two prizes available for poster presentations at the meeting. Richard was also invited to give an oral communication about his work to a large audience that included the world leaders in his field. This stimulated a healthy and long lasting discussion!
SportEx academic Dr Mike White was involved in organising the meeting as a member of its Scientific Committee as well as being a member of the Physiological Society Meetings Committee. He also edited the review papers that were written by the invited speakers at the conference which were published in Experimental Physiology, one of the two house journals of the Physiological Society.
