iBrum is a free iPod/iPad app which allows the exploration of Birmingham through your mobile device. It has a database of places of interest which can be searched by category. Each location has a map to help you to get there, a brief history, and other useful information such as opening times and entrance prices (if applicable). It is designed to give both residents of Birmingham - who may not have fully sampled all the city has to offer - and tourists -visiting for a limited time - inspiration for cultural, historical or leisurely days out.
Tabitha Dunn, one of the students involved in the project, comments:
Working on the app has enabled us to gain a number of skills that would not usually be explored as part of our degrees. We all agree it is important to have a deeper understanding of the software we use on a regular basis to enhance our educations and we receive a sense of pride and team work by coming together to create a tangible and useful final product. We have been separated into 5 teams to make this app following the brief we were given (with many of our own ideas added in for good measure) and have been given a comprehensive understanding of how we must work within our groups, communicating strongly and motivating ourselves and others to make a project work, skills that we can take on to any number of future careers (as well as having an interesting addition to our CVs)”
