Frank Morton November 2014

From its inception in 1961, Frank Morton has grown from a football match between the Chemical Engineering departments at the Universities of Birmingham and Manchester, to comprising of 19 sports with 26 universities consistently participating. Over the previous years, the event has been hosted all across the UK from Swansea to Newcastle to Strathclyde. It is with great pleasure that we can announce, that after a successful bid in March 2014, the University of Birmingham will be hosting the next Frank Morton on 17 February 2015.

Current plans will see the event begin with a careers fair at the Barclaycard Arena (formerly the NIA) – one of the most prominent indoor sporting and entertainment venues in Europe. The opening ceremony will officially welcome all students and sponsors who will then go on to play their chosen sport such as football, netball or even Quidditch! There will also be the option for students to remain in the Barclaycard Arena for spectators’ sports. Consisting of live music, speeches and of course the presentation of awards, the closing ceremony will mark the end of the biggest and best Frank Morton to date!

This year we currently have a total of nine companies attending the event with ABB confirmed as our platinum sponsor. Others include the National Nuclear Laboratory, CB&I and GSK. In addition, more companies are entering sports teams than in previous years, giving students and companies a greater opportunity to network.

We are appealing to all Chemical Engineering alumni to enter one of our many sports teams so we can have the most alumni at any Frank Morton event, showing just how great this university is that we all want to come back at any opportunity! We are also asking for any links to industry so we can approach even more companies that may be interested in sponsoring the event. What began as a friendly football tournament has now grown to include nearly 3000 people, benefitting students and companies alike. It is with great pleasure that we look forward to welcoming people to Birmingham and we would love to have you involved too!
