NHS Savile inquiry: evidence on fundraising

John Mohan, TSRC Director, was one of a group of academics invited by History and Policy to present evidence to the Lampard Inquiry, overseeing the NHS's investigations into the activities of Jimmy Savile. John's evidence showed how and why charitable fundraising became of renewed significance to the NHS in the early 1980s, and according to the investigators it "provided invaluable insight into… the culture of the NHS" and the historical context to their inquiries.

John Mohan, TSRC Director, was one of a group of academics invited by History and Policy to present evidence to the Lampard Inquiry, which was set up to provide oversight of the Department of Health and NHS investigations into the activities of Jimmy Savile.

History and Policy set up a closed seminar in May 2013, where John’s evidence showed how and why charitable fundraising became of renewed significance to the NHS in the early 1980s - a context of severe resource shortages, providing statistics on the scale and relative importance of such funding to individual health authorities.

According to the investigators the seminar “provided invaluable insight into… the culture of the NHS in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s [and] the historical context for the allegations about Savile’s behaviour”.
