Iain Law

The Department of Philosophy congratulates Iain Law for winning the Head of School's award in teaching excellence at the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion.

Iain was first nominated for the award by our students and the award was then given to him by a school panel. Iain will receive the award at the University's awards dinner in July.

Iain continually creates a positive and stimulating approach to learning and teaching. He is an innovative, engaging, and inspiring lecturer, able to explain difficult concepts with complete ease, clarity (and humour!) using everyday examples to aid understanding. His unique method of teaching encourages students to think beyond lectures and participate in widespread discussion, something that is incredibly conducive to learning and understanding. He actively engages in points of discussion that students make and encourages a learning environment where students can reflect on what has been discussed. Iain is also keen to continually develop as a teacher. On hearing about new material from students, he will actively read around the topic to help support and contribute towards his and our learning. Despite being a busy Head of Department, Iain is very approachable and always has time for students on an individual basis, providing a consistent level of support that is incredibly appreciated. He shows this by engaging in student-led initiatives, such as the Philosophy Society. His friendly and considerate manner means he is almost always the first point of call for any student who needs to speak to a member of staff. Iain Law is a friendly face in our department who is highly valued by each student he teaches. We believe that Iain should be commended for all the reasons above.
