The Deaprtment of English Language and Applied Linguistics is pleased to host Professor Lincoln Fernandes, from the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC, pron. ‘Oofski’), Florianopolis, Brazil.  Professor Fernandes is a specialist in corpus linguistics and translation, and will be working at Birmingham on an analysis of Portuguese translations of classic English children’s narratives, using parallel corpora.  While his Birmingham co-investigator is Prof Michael Toolan, the project will also draw on the expertise of other corpus linguists in the department.  Birmingham English Language has links with UFSC that go back more than 30 years; several of the UFSC faculty did their doctorates at Birmingham. This visit is sponsored by the Newton Foundation.
