The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Society are the newest group to join the EPS Community. They provide as many opportunities as possible to members and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
As we are a new society to the EPS Community we thought we would start with a bit about us, what we do and the kind of events that we have been running so far this year. WISE – Birmingham is a University society that aims to support and promote women within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at the University of Birmingham. Our passionate committee are focused on providing as many events and opportunities as possible to our members across the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences to integrate, form networks and gain knowledge of career opportunities to help inspire the next generation of female scientists and engineers.
Our most recent event, WISE Inspiration, brought together a series of inspirational female role models from academia and industry, as well as the first fellow of the Women’s Engineering Society, to come and chat to our members about how they have got to where they are today, answer questions and offer careers advice. The talks gave a fascinating insight into areas such as entrepreneurship, climbing the ladder in academia, life on a graduate scheme, work-life balance and becoming a Chartered Engineer. This presented a well-rounded view of a range of different career paths, which provided great fuel for discussion at the networking event that followed. It was fantastic to see lots of new faces at this event, and to see everyone thoroughly engaged and keen to find out more from our intriguing visitors! The event was very well received by our members, and also sparked a potential future collaboration with Aston University as they begin to establish their own WISE set up, so watch this space!
We work hard to bring events like this to our members, but we also love a good social too. From ten-pin bowling to eating out, or even tackling the local pub quiz, we hold regular social events to allow our members to get to know each other in a friendly environment, where they can unwind from the inevitable stress that comes from studying a science or engineering degree!
