The Birmingham International Summer School (BISS) 2016 proved to be a tremendous success with 126 international students participating in three weeks of academic and social activities. Students were welcomed from a variety of countries, with many from key University partners.

Alongside the existing programmes of British Cultural Heritage, and Mathematical Finance and Financial Time Series Analysis, BISS launched two new programmes this year in Film and Media and Biomedical Sciences: From Laboratory Bench to Hospital Bedside.

BISS students took part in an extensive social and cultural programme, which included a number of day trips to iconic UK cities such as London, Cambridge and Stratford-Upon Avon, as well as taking part in local events including a quiz and pub night. Through the many events BISS offered, individuals from around the world were able to share in a diverse and multi-cultural experience.

Alexander Neubauer, studying Film and Media at Goethe University Frankfurt, said “The Birmingham International Summer School is a great experience in total. You get to know more than just the atmosphere at a British University because you learn a lot about the culture - you meet new people and network!”

Yuan Chen, studying British Cultural Heritage at South China University of Technology, also said “A fantastic, unforgettable experience in the UK, and I gained a lot of knowledge about this attractive country.”

After a successful three weeks BISS closed with an Award Ceremony and certificate presentation attended by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham Councillor Carl Rice.

Professor Jon Green, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) and BISS Academic Lead said “BISS gives international students an opportunity to experience education at the University as well as the culture of Birmingham and other locations such as Ironbridge and Stratford. Many of these students come from our U21 partners and we also offer places to staff – this all helps to foster greater links with these Universities.”
