The task of moving over 62km of books and journals from the old Library to the University’s new facility is now complete.
In August, Guild President Ellie Keiller placed one of the final books on the Library’s brand new shelves and expressed: ‘It's been so exciting to watch the building of our fantastic new Library and knowing that students at the University of Birmingham will be studying in top class facilities.’
This landmark moment in the Library’s final stages of completion celebrates over 10 years of development and work. The new £60 million Library is the first of its kind to be built in over a century and will inspire countless students and scholars to come.
The new library will open to students and staff on the first day of Welcome Week; September 19th. The new, technology-rich Library will house a variety of learning spaces to cater for different modes of study. Alongside traditional learning resources, the Library teems with innovative tools and enhanced accessibility for learning in the 21st Century and beyond. The opening of the new Library will also herald the beginning of the University’s next stage of campus redevelopment, when work begins on the Green Heart in early 2017.
