Engineers of the future to benefit from a new state-of-the-art building

The University of Birmingham has received the go-ahead for a new state-of-the-art School of Engineering.

The green light came from Birmingham City Council today, amid plans that will provide an excellent academic building for the benefit of students, staff and researchers.

The new School of Engineering will sit alongside a world class centre of excellence in rail in partnership with industry, focusing on digital systems. Funded as part of the newly-created UK Railway Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN), it will focus on railway control and simulation, data integration and cybersecurity, condition monitoring and sensing, and improved methods for technology introduction. This builds on existing strength in rail research.

Head of the School of Engineering Professor Mark Sterling said: “We are delighted to receive approval from Birmingham City Council. This is a really exciting project that will bring many of our engineering disciplines into one purpose-designed building. This will help us nurture the engineers of the future."

Professor Clive Roberts, who is leading the University’s digital rail work, said: “I am really looking forward to seeing this building become a reality. The UKRRIN Digital Systems Innovation Centre will bring industry into the heart of the University campus and ensure that the University plays a part in taking the next step in Britain’s transport infrastructure.”

Building is due to commence in August 2018, with the project due for completion in 2020.
