Engineering is one of the most productive sectors in our economy, but a lack of graduates entering the profession is damaging growth. With major investment being made in infrastructure and new technologies that aim to improve the way we travel, work and live, it’s crucial to the nation’s success that more people join the profession.

The Year of Engineering is a year-long government campaign celebrating the world and wonder of engineering. It also forms an important part of the Industrial Strategy which is committed to boosting engineering across the UK - ensuring everyone has the skills needed to thrive in a modern economy. Throughout 2018 the government has worked with hundreds of industry partners to bring young people, parents, and their teachers face to face with engineering activities, events, and role models.

Dr Pola Goldberg Oppenheimer, Reader in Micro-engineering and Bio-nanotechnology and Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham was invited to attend an All Party Parliamentary Engineering Group meeting at the House of Lords on Wednesday 28 November 2018.

Dr Oppenheimer joined the discussion, hosted by Professor the Lord Broers, regarding the Government’s Year of Engineering campaign to discuss ways we are tackling the engineering skills gap and to help widen the pool of young people who join the profession.

During the meeting, Stephen Metcalfe MP, Government Envoy for the Year of Engineering, discussed why the sector is of such vital importance, alongside the exciting opportunities in UK Engineering. Stephen brings knowledge, experience and commitment to the role, engaging with government colleagues and industry to ensure that the campaign reaches young people, their parents and their teachers in all parts of the UK.

Inspiring graduate engineers also shared their stories, as well as industry leaders from Atkins Global, Bosch and AECOM.
