As one of the newest EPS societies, we can unequivocally claim that this has been our best semester yet.
We are BEaMS, a society formed within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) to provide a support network for black and minority ethnic (BME) scientists and engineers. It is our bid to support them as best as we can, offering advice and inspiration from those in our wider network. We aim is to represent and promote equality and diversity within the College and the wider University community.
We formed in October with plenty of open discussions, gathering members and establishing ourselves as a group. We’ve met loads of great staff across the University and are growing our network. Our welcome event attracted lots of students from all different departments across the College and it was great to see so many people there.
We are delighted to introduce our committee:
- Navleen Kaur - President
- Memoree Boakye - Vice-President
- Mira Shukla - Treasurer
- Ademilade Afolabi - Secretary
The Society would also like to take this opportunity to thank our two volunteers who have helped us immensely this term Lewechi Nkata and Jordan Wiltshire!
We are going from strength to strength creating more opportunities for our members to engage with the Society. Our second event, Dinner with BEaMs was the first real opportunity to bring everyone we’ve met together in one place and celebrate our first term. This festive meal saw plenty of conversation and a wonderful talk from Dr Mark Esson, Doctor of Applied Mathematics, and we rounded up our events for our very first semester in style.
This is only the beginning for BEaMS. We have so many ideas and plans for next semester and beyond. As a new society, it would be great to have more people involved. We need your help! We’d love to hear from as many of you as possible to hear your advice and experiences so you can help us shape the society so we can reach our full potential. To get involved please email email@example.com!
For those who want to stay up to date on what we have planned, you can do that through our Facebook page.
We hope to see you at our events next term!
