In December 2017, the Ironbridge International Institute for Cultural Heritage (IIICH) teamed up with West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD) to deliver another workshop in our series of events for students and professionals in the heritage and museum sector.
The workshop considered the museum funding process and the management skills needed to deliver a successful project. The programme featured presentations and case studies from a fantastic range of speakers.
Vanessa Harbar, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund West Midlands began the day with an overview of heritage funding, and some of the projects that have been made possible through HLF funding in the region.
Tim Bryan, Head of Collections at the British Motor Museum followed with a presentation on his own experiences about getting a large-scale museum project off the ground.
Kate Dickinson, Director of Creative Heritage Consultants outlined the positive role that consultants can play in the management of a project, and top tips for getting the most out of these partnerships.
After lunch and networking, the afternoon’s session began with a presentation from Elizabeth Pimblett, Director of the Cider Museum in Hereford. Elizabeth spoke about her tried and tested methods for keeping a project on track and within budget.
Finally, John Clatworthy, Director of the Lapworth Museum of Geology shared his expertise on managing expectations during the Lapworth’s major HLF funded redevelopment project.
We ended the afternoon with round table discussions and the relationship between museums and universities and a speed networking session which gave attendees the opportunity to meet IIICH MA students and learn more about our placement scheme.
Jamie Davies, Teaching Fellow for the Ironbridge International Institute for Cultural Heritage said of the workshop: “It was fantastic to run a second workshop with the WMMD. It is essential to bring practitioners, researchers and emerging museum professionals. To do so in an inclusive, honest and dynamic learning environment resulted in a really engaging day. For our students, these workshops support the classroom learning and site visits, and more importantly provide a networking opportunity with those museum professionals and volunteers from the West Midlands and beyond”.
