Rebecca Slater, centre, receives her NDNA award.

The manager of the University of Birmingham’s Oaks Nursery, Rebecca Slater, has been named National Day Nursery Manager of the Year at a recent awards ceremony.

The National Day Nurseries Association made the award earlier this month to Rebecca, who has worked at The Oaks for more than 10 years.

Rebecca said: “I feel extremely grateful that my colleagues took the time to nominate me for the award, and I of course feel extremely proud that I am the NDNA Manager of the Year 2018. The response from colleagues, both at the setting and beyond, and parents’ lovely comments congratulating me on my award just makes everything worthwhile.”

University Hospitality and Accommodation Services (HAS) Manager Gail Eagles said: “This is a fantastic achievement and further recognition of the amazing job that Rebecca does and her talent as a manager and leader. Needless to say, we are very proud of our home grown talent. She is a prime example of a rising star and a true credit to the University.”

The University of Birmingham runs two day nurseries, the Oaks  in Selly Oak and the Elms in Edgbaston. In 2017, both nurseries were awarded Millie’s Mark, which means every single member of staff, including administrative and kitchen colleagues, have paediatric first aid training. This gives them the skills and confidence to keep children safe, minimise risk and accidents and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.
