It’s been a busy start to the academic year for the Materials Society! We’ve welcomed a new cohort of students and run lots of exciting social events to get everyone involved.
We continued our famous Family Scheme, where 4-5 first years are grouped with 2 students from the upper years in order to provide a more supportive environment with communication across all year groups. This is proving a highly success way of welcome and integrating new students into the Materials Family! To start the year off we had a Ping Pong and Pizza party in Digbeth, for all of our first years and their ‘parents’. It was really successful and everyone had a fantastic time.
We also held our annual BUMS vs NucSoc event, which was as great as ever and saw both societies together for a good laugh and expressing our love for BUMS and friendly competition with NucSoc! Later in the term we held a charity quiz, raising money for Movember and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Our Careers Reps pulled together an amazing Materials Careers Fair in November. The afternoon saw a wide range of companies including Airbus, JCB, MTC, and the University’s own Careers Network. We have a Careers Fair every year to create opportunities for students to talk to potential employers and get an idea of what internships and graduate schemes are on offer. It was open to all students in the School and the turnout was very good. Since then many attendees have secured interviews for placements in the future, specifically at Airbus!
Finally, to finish the term, our Social Secs pulled off an incredibly festive BUMS Christmas Dinner at The Goose in Selly Oak which had more than 50 attendees, including undergraduates, postgraduates and staff! It was a brilliant way to end the semester and gave everyone an opportunity to let their hair down after a busy term.
We will return revitalised after the winter break to continue our success on the committee of BUMS, with plenty more social and careers events planned for the New Year. A big event in the Metallurgy and Materials social calendar is the Materials Ball! Preparations are in full swing for this event on the 22 February 2020, so save the date and look out for more information nearer the time!
