This semester has been a busy one for CivSoc! Starting off with our annual Hi Vis bar crawl we lit up Broad Street in the City Centre with our luminous hi-vis vests. This event welcomes our new members into the Society, introducing them to members from the older year groups.
Following last year’s traditions, we also continued our football league where many of our cohort meet up one a week to play friendly matches against other departmental teams. Building on the success of last year this also included staff v student matches where the staff have yet to win! We’ve added many sober socials such as our trampolining and curry night to our calendar which all proved a great hit.
The second half of the semester began with our second large outing of the year: STAMINA. This new event organised by CivSoc brought together all the engineering societies into one huge night out, each wearing a different neon colour. This was thoroughly enjoyed as it provided a space for the different disciplines of engineering to come together and socialise outside of the few modules taught to all.
As well as this arrangements began to prepare for RESPECT, an initiative run by the Department of Civil Engineering to provide students with the chance to get placement and sponsorships from some of the best companies in the industry. CV checks, application advice and industry talks, including a talk by the ICE explaining the different disciplines of engineering, made sure the students felt prepared for the application process.
The Christmas festivities ended the semester in three events: Christmas Dinner at Arco Lounge, a trip to the Birmingham Christmas Markets, the largest German market in the UK, and the EPS Christmas Netball and Football Tournament where we dressed up to compete against other College societies in friendly, festive matches.
We’ve crammed a lot into a few short months and there’s more to come next term so watch this space!
