The 2019 QS World University Rankings have placed Birmingham at 13th globally, our highest position on record. The Dental School have always been very highly placed in the QS rankings, largely due to the strength of our research. In 2016 we were 17th and in 2017 and 2019 we ranked 19th. However, in 2019 we have risen to 13th in the world, a fantastic achievement for a relatively small school.

The QS rankings have become extremely high profile with many Universities canvassing support worldwide for their “academic reputation” domain, one of 4 major domains, the other 3 being “employer reputation”, “citations per publication” and “H-index”. The QS tables are more competitive today than ever before and only 5 of 16 UK Schools make the top 50: Cardiff are at 50, Newcastle at 38, Manchester 18th, UCL Eastman 12th; and KCL at joint 2nd. Indeed, in research citations, allowing 0.2 points out of 100 points in leeway, Birmingham are only beaten by Copenhagen and Buffalo.

Head of School, Professor Iain Chapple commented, “this is a fantastic accolade and a richly deserved reward for our staff who have worked incredibly hard on their research impact and reach”.
