IRiS Deputy Director, Professor Nando Sigona, was invited to a Red Cross event to give the keynote address at the high profile debate in Geneva on 15th October 2019.
The inter-agency meeting, organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross, at the Humanitariumin Geneva, was based on “Preserving humanitarian space in the field of migration”. Professor Sigona discussed the challenges for humanitarian actors in the context of the Global Compacts on migration and refugees. Also in attendence were representatives from the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), UN Migration Network and the Danish Refugee Council. The meeting examined threats to the humanitarian space required by humanitarian agencies working in the field of migration. The outcome of the meeting was to develop an impartial and independent response to the needs of migrants and the protection of their rights.
