Flavia Vanni (pictured right), a third-year doctoral researcher in Byzantine Studies in CBOMGS, has been awarded a Junior Fellowship at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library in Washington DC for the academic year 2019-2020. Jessica Varsallona (pictured below), also a third- year doctoral researcher in Byzantine Studies in CBOMGS, has been awarded a Summer Fellowship for 2019.
In the past few years several PhD candidates at the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies have been awarded this highly competitive and prestigious Fellowship, including Anna Kelley who is a Junior Research Fellow there this year.
Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection is an institute in Washington DC, administered by the Trustees for Harvard University. It is a world-leading centre for Byzantine, Pre-Columbian and Garden studies, attracting exceptional scholars for short and long-term residential fellowships at different stages of their research. The Junior Fellowship is a nine-month post designed to facilitate doctoral research. Summer Fellowships are a shorter, three-month opportunity that provides fellows access to the resources at Dumbarton Oaks for an individual research project.
Flavia and Jessica are delighted to have been offered this prestigious fellowship and to have the chance to complete their dissertations at Dumbarton Oaks. Their research will benefit greatly from the extensive library resources and the vibrant scholarly environment. As a Junior Fellow, Flavia will continue the research for her doctoral dissertation examining Byzantine stucco work in Middle and Late Byzantine Architecture. Jessica Varsallona will also spend her Summer Fellowship working on her doctoral dissertation on Palaiologan architecture in Constantinople.
