The Birmingham Energy Institute has partnered with Tyselely Energy Park to support the development of energy engineering skills amongst the school children and local community of Tyseley and Hay Mills.
The Birmingham Energy Institute has partnered with Tyselely Energy Park to support the development of energy engineering skills amongst the school children and local community of Tyseley and Hay Mills.
The Energy Engineering Skills for the New Industrial Revolution project will raise awareness of Tyseley Energy Park and its role in the region's transition to a zero-carbon economy.
Speaking about the Energy Engineering Skills for the New Industrial Revolution, Dr Emily Prestwood, Energy Development Manager for the Birmingham Energy Institute said: “This is an exciting project to be part of. The work of the BEI and TEP is creating low-cost, low-carbon energy from homes and businesses as well as engineering, technical and business innovations skills training and jobs for the Tyseley and Hay Mills community. This project will allow us to ensure the community, are engaged and made aware of these developments so that they are able to take advantage of these opportunities,”
Activities will include the delivery of public engagement events and associated resources for primary and secondary schools in East Birmingham. The outreach activities will inform school children and the community about energy engineering and the diverse range of careers and skills the profession offers. In addition, it will provide skills training to children, families and the community that will help them prosper from the zero-carbon transition. These activities are part of a developing programme of outreach and engagement activity around the TEP, aiming to ensure the community is not left behind by the new Industrial Revolution.
The delivery of this project will be supported by Allan Dos Santos, Chemical Engineering Student and Outreach Officer for the Birmingham Energy Society at the University of Birmingham. Speaking about the project, Allan said: “I am thoroughly delighted to be a part of a project on this scale that positively impacts the community. Working towards a zero-carbon economy and encouraging the community to participate in energy engineering is what this project is about. Developing resources, activities and networks for the project will help to educate, raise awareness and inspire young people.”
The Energy Engineering Skills for the New Industrial Revolution project has been funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and is one of 17 current Ingenious Grant awards. The Ingenious Grant Awards engage the public with engineers and engineering while providing engineers with skills and opportunities in public engagement.
