Professor Clive Roberts, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham has today been elected as a council member of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineering (IRSE).
The IRSE is the professional institution for all those engaged in or associated with railway signalling and telecommunications, train control, traffic management and allied professions. The Institution and its members, are active worldwide, with 50% of its membership based outside the UK.
The IRSE aims to advance the science and practice of train control and communications engineering within the industry, and to maintain high standards of knowledge and competence within the profession. The overriding purpose in doing this is for the public benefit, to help ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and freight by rail.
Council members are elected by the corporate members of the Institution that are Fellows, Members and Associate Members, for two year terms, and they can stand for election for subsequent terms if they wish to do so. The Council is supported by a number of principal Committees.
As the Head of the School of Engineering (and Director of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education), becoming an elected member of the council provides a brilliant opportunity to coordinate and drive forward signalling, communications and train control research and to develop the railway industry in the UK and across the globe.
Professor Clive Roberts says,
“I am delighted to have been elected onto the Council of the Institute of Railway Signalling Engineers. The IRSE is the world’s leading institution for railway signalling and communications - a critical part of our railways and that I am passionate about and have dedicated my research career to. This is an exciting time for our profession with huge potential to drive a transformation in both the technology and delivery of our work. I look forward to joining the IRSE Council and driving forward the work and profile of the Institute in the coming months and years.”
President of the IRSE, Dr Daniel Woodland says,
“I extend a very warm welcome to Professor Roberts on joining our Council. His considerable expertise and knowledge of our industry will be a tremendous asset to the Institution, and I look forward to working more closely with him in the future.”
