University Women’s Choir were pleased to perform new music last month by Maltese composer, Euchar Gravina, in a programme of Spanish-inspired works.
Under the baton of Jack Apperley, University Women’s Choir performed Euchar Gravina’s piece, Soneto XIII (based on texts by Garcilaso de la Vega) to critical acclaim. Gravina is a composer based in London and Artistic Director of the Waterloo Festival. Performances of his music have been given by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Christ Church Cathedral Choir (Oxford), Psappha Ensemble, Chroma, and mezzo-soprano Marvic Monreal.
Meanwhile, Birmingham University Singers and their Principal Conductor, Bob Chilcott gave vibrant performances of music Vaughan Williams, Howells, Giles Swayne, and James MacMillan.
Choirs are an integral part of University Music in Birmingham, and offer unrivalled opportunities for young singers at any university in the UK. For more information, or if you would like to find out more about choirs at University of Birmingham, please contact Gavin Allsop (g.m.allsop@bham.ac.uk).
