'A threat to the right to seek asylum'. IRiS Director, Professor Nando Sigona discusses the New Immigration Plan in the House of Lords

Professor Nando Sigona
IRiS Director, Professor Nando Sigona, was invited to speak at a private roundtable of the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee chaired by Baroness Hamwee.
The aim of the roundtable discussion was to consider ‘justice and home affairs, including the domestic criminal justice system, and international cooperation in respect of criminal justice, civil justice, migration and asylum.’ Professor Sigona shared his thoughts on the assumptions on which the Government’s new immigration plan is built, and, in particular, noted that, if implemented, the proposed radical changes to the asylum system will undermine the right to seek asylum and the UK’s commitment to the 1951 Refugee Convention.
