After a year off due to COVID, Brum Eco Racing is back and working on our car once again, read on for a whistle stop tour of semester 1 of 2021!

The existing team started off the year with the recruitment drive to find new members. New UoB students could find us and the car up on the Vale pathway during Welcome Week, and at the EPS Societies’ Fair the week after. We had a great recruitment drive, with over 100 people registering their interest!

We’ve been busy with new projects too. Work is well underway on a brand new engine and the new electric powertrain is also being designed. Next up we’ll be cutting windows on the new car cover, and finally making the elusive wheel covers that have been planned for so many years.

The team also got out to car testing early this year, with our first testing day in October. It was a huge success, getting the car running for the first time in over a year, testing the new telemetry system and two new drivers got their first laps in. Sadly the same couldn’t be said for our December testing day. The team braved the elements in the freezing cold as we tried to get the engine to run. We prevailed for 2 hours but unfortunately ran out of fuel before getting the car to move. We’ll be back for more (hopefully warmer!) testing in the New Year.

Brum Eco Racing were happy to be asked to attend the opening events of the new School of Engineering Building. We had a great time talking to visitors and showing off the car to alumni and industry partners!

As one of our new partnerships this year, Igus came in to visit the team to recommend some parts to increase our cars performance and reduce its weight. We were very grateful to receive some sample polymer bearings to use in our car!

Last but not least, a huge thanks to the team for all the hard work this semester, it wouldn’t be possible without you! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
