Winterbourne House and Gardens will be hosting the Birmingham Honey Show this weekend, with an opportunity to find out all about beekeeping from some of the region’s leading experts.
Visitors will be able to enjoy free entry to the show and gardens, where they can see some of Winterbourne’s bees in glass observation hives, and take part in a wide variety of activities including bee demonstrations and honey and produce displays.
Honey produce including hive-fresh honey, honeycomb, pollen and other specialties such as candles and lotions will also be available and Winterbourne’s tea rooms will be open for cake and other refreshments.
Winterbourne has around a dozen hives, and honey is harvested in August. The huge variety of flowers throughout the garden ensure the bees can feast on different nectars from early in the year right through to the autumn when they go into hibernation.
This is the first year that Winterbourne has hosted the show, which is also part of Heritage Open Days ‘Edible England’ festival – a nationwide celebration of history and culture which this year is all about food, and the history, culture and customs associated with it.
Lee Hale, Head of Winterbourne House and Gardens, said: “The bees at Winterbourne have been really spoiled for choice this year with glorious displays of wild and cultivated flowers from around the world. We are really looking forward to hosting the Birmingham Honey Show and welcoming bee and honey enthusiasts from across the region to enjoy a day out in our gardens.”
The Birmingham Honey Show will be open at Winterbourne on 11 and 12 September from 10:30 to 17:00, with the last admission at 16:30.
