The annual Summer Festival of Music is a highlight of the academic year for musicians at the University of Birmingham – this year, University Music were pleased to host a two-week period of online and in-person events over two weeks in June.
This year’s festival featured a wide range of activities, including in-person sharing platforms, conducting opportunities, as well as a string of YouTube premieres for videos put together by talented students from across the University. The festival saw the introduction of a new “In conversation with…” series, giving students and the public alike the opportunity to hear from leading musicians including Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Trish Clowes, and John Rutter. Students and staff were also able to take part in online workshops for singing and jazz, as well as the Music Society’s first virtual bake-along.
In parallel to the Festival, the University of Birmingham Music Society launched their new Creative Exchange online installation, CONNECTION – COLLABORATION – COMMUNITY, bringing together students from across the University to showcase artwork, poetry, and compositions and create a virtual presentation on the theme of ‘community’. This installation will be available for a limited time at www.creativeexchangebrum.com.
University Music provides the University of Birmingham with one of the liveliest music-making scenes of any campus. With around 1500 positions available in our 35-plus ensembles, members participate in a variety of instrumental and vocal groups, across a range of abilities and styles.
