SoSP doctoral researcher Emma Partlow has received an award from the ESRC Impact Accelerator Account for her new project: Moving into work: exploring how young disabled people are transitioning from education to work.
SoSP Doctoral Researcher Emma Partlow has received an award from the ESRC Impact Accelerator Account for her new project 'Moving into work: exploring how young disabled people are transitioning from education to work'.
Emma is currently undertaking doctoral research in the area of disability and employment, focusing specifically on disabled experiences of paid work. Emma has previously engaged in research projects which have focused upon conscious and unconscious bias, disabled students’ experiences of stigma within the university setting and disabled people’s perspectives on equality (UK legislation) to name a few.
The ESRC IAA ABC Award will fund Emma’s new secondment, via Birmingham Business School. This research seeks to engage with young disabled people aged 18-25 who are looking to move into paid employment or have recently made this transition from Further or Higher Education. This project will explore the unique experience of young disabled job seekers and recent recruits to analyse how they are experiencing this transition. A key aim of the research is to create a resource that helps disabled young people to navigate the process of entering paid employment and negotiate recruitment processes and beyond. Findings from the research will be presented to the host organisation and other relevant stakeholders. This research is of key interest to the Work Inclusivity Research Centre (WIRC) at University of Birmingham (UoB).
Emma’s PhD title is 'Reasonable or unreasonable adjustments for working bodies? The experience of work as a disabled person in Britain.' Prior to beginning her PhD studies, Emma completed a BA (Hons) Sociology and an MA Social Research at UoB.
