The School of Chemical Engineering is very pleased to have achieved an excellent performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) – the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. 87%of the research in the School was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. It was ranked joint fourth overall in the UK for its research prowess and first nationally for research impact.

Professor Mark Simmons, Head of School, said: “We are very pleased with our REF results they reflect a period of sustained excellence across our research base. The future looks good as we continue our internationally-leading work in Formulation Engineering, in which field we were recently awarded a renewal of a Centre for Doctoral Training. We are also intrinsically involved in the developments of the Birmingham Energy Institute, focusing on energy storage and new energy technologies, and look forward to making great breakthroughs in this area.”

The School of Chemical Engineering is part of the University’s College of Engineering and Physical Sciences which draws together research strengths across the academic schools to focus on the wider research themes of Advanced Manufacturing, Science Frontiers, and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability. Professor John Bridgeman, College Director of Research, said: “I am delighted at the research performance of the School of Chemical Engineering. It is a beacon of excellence within its field and a key contributor to the College’s mission to tackle the societal issues of resilience, energy and sustainability”.
