ITSEE and the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion are delighted to welcome a Visiting Fellow from Brazil, Dr Luise Frenkel.

Dr Frenkel is Assistant Professor in Classical Greek Language and Literature at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. She holds doctorates in Mathematics and Patristics, and specialises in fifth-century history, dialogues and polemics in Late Antiquity, and early Christian manuscripts written in Greek and Syriac. Her monograph, Theodotus of Ancyra's Homilies and the Council of Ephesus, was published by Peeters in 2015. She has published a number of other papers on late antique religious texts, and is also a member of the research group at the University of Erfurt on Religious individualization in historical perspective.

As part of the University of Birmingham's Brazil Visiting Fellows Scheme, Dr Frenkel is resident in ITSEE for three months from December 2016 to February 2017. Her work will include an examination of some of the Syriac manuscripts in the University's Mingana Collection of Middle Eastern Manuscripts.

Dr Frenkel has already visited Birmingham to deliver a paper at the Sixth British Patristics conference. We are glad to welcome her back for what we hope will be a productive period of study, shedding new light on some of the documents in the University's collections and leading to new international collaborations.
