The University of Birmingham is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Tim Jones as its new Provost and Vice-Principal. Professor Jones, who is currently Interim Provost at the University of Warwick, will take up his new role at the University of Birmingham on 1 September 2016.
A distinguished researcher and academic leader, Professor Jones has held a number of leadership positions at the University of Warwick including Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Science, Engineering and Medicine (2013-15), Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (Science and Medicine), Knowledge Transfer and Business Engagement (2011-13) and Chair of the Faculty of Science (2010-11). He is also currently a member of Council at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), a member of the Science Advisory Council for Wales, and a Non-Executive Director of the Alan Turing Institute.
Commenting on Professor Jones’ appointment, Professor Sir David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Birmingham said, “Tim is recognised within the sector for his outstanding leadership, research excellence, and operational expertise and I am delighted to welcome him to Birmingham as our new Provost. Tim will play a pivotal role in guiding our strategy and realizing our ambition.”
Professor Jones added: “I am delighted to have been appointed as the next Birmingham Provost. It is an exciting time to be joining the University and I am looking forward to working with staff and students across the institution to help realise the exciting ambitions of the strategy and to continue to enhance the reputation and influence of the University on the regional, national, and international stage.”
As a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Warwick, Tim’s research is in advanced electronic materials and is focused on the surface and thin film properties of a wide range of materials and nanostructures, with applications in areas such as photovoltaics. Tim has published over 300 papers, has an h-index of 50 and has graduated 50 PhD students. Prior to joining Warwick in 2007, Tim held a number of posts at Imperial College London including as Co-Director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology (2002-07), and as Professor of Chemical Physics (1997-07) and the STS/Sumitomo Professor of Electronic Materials.
