Dr Barney Scholefield, a Clinician Scientist and Paediatric Intensivist from the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing has been working with leading academic researchers in the field of paediatric cardiac arrest, resuscitation and critical care trial at Boston Children's Hospital.
Dr Scholefield, who is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), is the first UK Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant to be awarded an NIHR Clinician Scientist award and undertake this prestigious international fellowship. This is a fantastic opportunity to form international collaborations and to bring back and emulate their academic successes within the University of Birmingham and the UK NHS over the coming years.
Dr Scholefield is building on his successful Post cardiac Arrest Care in Kids (PACK) Programme with the support of the NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship programme. He is working with the most influential researchers in the field, discovering new advances in paediatric resuscitation science, multi-centre research in quality of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and beginning to build a global network of clinical academics to enable research to succeed in this challenging area.
In collaboration with the Birmingham Acute Care Research (BACR) Group in the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, Paediatric Intensive Care Research team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and the UK Paediatric Intensive Care Society-Study Group, Dr Scholefield is using this fellowship to enhance his leadership of the UK wide, PACK research programme to reduce uncertainty and improve outcomes after paediatric cardiac arrest.
