The Department of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS) held a special joint seminar with the Department of Theology and Religion on the theme of ‘Religiously-based political violence: What does God have to do with it?”.

Professor Jocelyne Cesari (University of Birmingham) presented alongside Dr Fabio Petito (University of Sussex) and Dr Akil Awan (Royal Holloway University). The event was chaired by Dr Richard Lock-Pullan (POLSIS).

Dr Mark Goodwin, convenor of the POLSIS departmental seminar series commented, “This seminar gave staff and students a rare opportunity to hear from three true experts on this highly topical issue.  A topic like this lends itself to a more multi-disciplinary approach and the involvement of the Department of Theology and Religion enabled those staff and students in attendance to explore critically-important issues that cut across our disciplinary boundaries. This event was a great opportunity for students in particular to consider the interaction of religion and politics guided by some of the most respected academics in the field.”
