On 27th April Dr Huw Macartney (POLSIS) hosted a workshop on Bank Culture with high profile speakers from the Financial Conduct Authority, the British Bankers Association, and the Banking Standards Board.

The workshop followed Dr Macartney’s British Academy funded project on the Culture of Banking in Anglo-America, which is culminating in his forthcoming book on the same theme. Following the financial crisis and the Libor scandal, ethics and values became major areas of reform for UK and US policymakers and banks.

The workshop involved speakers from the Financial Conduct Authority, the British Bankers Association, the Banking Standards Board, Cass Business School, the Financial Services Consumer Panel, Finance Watch, and the Universities of Amsterdam, Luxembourg and Kings. The final panel was led by Martin Wheatley, former head of the FCA. The aim was to examine the state of reform efforts to date and to broaden the scope, by examining the impact that financialzation in Anglo-America has on bank culture – a theme that is largely ignored by the supply-side focus of regulators and the banks.
