Talented Birmingham students awarded prestigious Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) teacher training scholarships.
Two geography students from the University of Birmingham have been awarded competitive Geography Teacher Training Scholarships and will begin their teacher training course in autumn 2019.
Funded by the Department for Education and awarded by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), the sought after Geography Scholarships provide trainee teachers with significant financial and professional support.
Awardees receive £28,000 of tax-free funding and an array of additional benefits that include: training events, access to teaching materials and resources, Fellowship of the Society, membership of the Geographical Association, plus networking opportunities and support throughout their training.
The two Birmingham students are Ruqayyah Lorgat and Lucy Butler.
Lucy Butler said:
I am honoured to have been awarded the RGS-IBG Geography Scholarship. With the help of the Society and its Fellows, I hope to become a geography teacher that inspires many more young people to develop a passion for the subject I have fallen in love with.
The Society’s Head of Education and Outdoor Learning, Steve Brace, added:
Scholarships are awarded to individuals with outstanding geographical knowledge and skills, and only the top 10% of prospective geography teachers will receive a Scholarship.
The Royal Geographical Society is delighted that Lucy and Ruqayyah are becoming geography teachers and we look forward to supporting them during their training year and as they enter the profession.
